Coronavirus, an update from Active Cornwall

Opening Up School Facilities

Active Cornwall was 1 of 23 Active Partnerships who were part of a yearlong pilot project starting in December 2019. The aim of this project was to understand the barriers to schools opening up their facilities for community and extracurricular use. We worked with schools in Cornwall to understand their own specific needs and how we could help provide solutions to the barriers they each faced.

Research tells us that almost 40% of sports facilities in England are on school sites. This means that schools hold the key to being able to provide opportunities for their communities to access sport and physical activity.

The Opening up School Facilities agenda aims to help schools utilise this asset and experience the mutual benefits for both themselves and their local communities.

As we move into Phase 2 of this work, Active Cornwall will be looking to target schools who want to expand their extracurricular offer to pupils who are most at risk of the effects of inequalities as a results of the pandemic.

If you want to work with us on this project, please get in touch by emailing Megan at Active Cornwall on
and expressing your interest.

We would encourage you to think specifically about what your barriers are and how we could support you in opening your facilities.
