2014 Cornwall NGB Forum - Making it easy!
Wednesday 2nd April 2014 saw local leaders in sports development from National Governing Bodies (NGBs) of sport come together with the Cornwall Sports Partnership, Tempus Leisure, Sport England, Volunteer Cornwall, Parkwood Leisure and Workplace Health to look at ways to increase participation in their sports.
Representatives from sports such as Football, Cricket and Rugby mixed with those from Gymnastics and Golf to look at ways to attract more people into weekly participation and share ideas.
The day started with Tim Marrion from The Cornwall Sports Partnership setting the scene on participation in sport in Cornwall and the challenges ahead. Sport England then overlaid the national picture and were followed by two great opportunities for NGBs to attract more people into their sports; these included the Tempus Leisure ACTIVE project and Health Promotions around their Healthy Workplaces programme.
Joe Skinner who attended from the Cornwall Cricket Board said 'The forum organised by the Cornwall Sports Partnership was a great opportunity for NGBs to meet and work with key sports development partners. Getting all the key deliverers in one room working together to help shape and support NGB outcomes for sports programme for 16+ participants is vital in getting more people active more frequently across Cornwall'.
The day was closed with the challenge for NGBs to package their sports differently making 'it easy' to play their sport. The day was delivered shortly after Sport England had announced a drop in investment into certain sports due to falling participation.
Tim Marrion from the Cornwall Sports Partnership who coordinated the day commented 'It was great to see a wide variety of sports come together to look at how we can make sure the community of Cornwall have access to sport and physical activity locally whether this is where they live, in their workplace or in local leisure facilities. This is the start of some exciting offers to attract people to sport and physical activity for life'.
