704,900 people in the South West regularly playing sport

The number of adults in the South West who play sport at least three times a week has reached 704,900.

New research shows that across England 6.93 million adults are participating regularly in sport, taking the increase to 635,000 since the Olympic and Paralympic bid was won in 2005.

Key findings from Sport England’s Active People Survey 3 (APS3) for the South West include:

  • 236,500 adults contribute at least one hour a week to volunteering in sport
  • Over 1.036 million adults are now members of a club where they do sport
  • 817,600 adults in the region have received tuition to improve their sporting performance in the past 12 months
  • 690,800 adults in the region have taken part in competitive sport during the past 12 months.
