Canoe England Volunteer & Recognition Awards 2009

Canoe England Volunteer and Recognition Awards 2009

Volunteers from around the country travelled to Bedford in January to attend the Volunteer Recognition Awards 2009.

Almost 200 people gathered at this annual celebration of volunteers’ contributions to the sport which took place during the Canoe England Coach Conference.  Canoe Slalom European and World Championships medallist Etienne Stott was on hand to present the awards alongside Shaun Dawson, Chief Executive of Lee Valley Regional Park, the venue for the 2012 Olympic whitewater events.

Amongst the recipients was Andy Barclay from Cornwall Learning Outdoors whose nomination was for Outstanding Contribution to canoeing in the South West region.  Andy has played an active role within the south west for the last 20 years.  He was Local Coaching Organiser for Cornwall from 1989 to 2002 when he became Regional Coaching Organiser for Devon and Cornwall, a position he filled until late 2009.

He has contributed across the region as a Level 5 Coach and Assessor and his dedication has led to the development of canoesport coaching throughout the 2 counties.  His passion for the sport has been key in making things happen and many coaches have been fortunate to benefit from his courses, workshops and expertise.
