Center Parcs National Schools Championships Regional FINALS 2010

Badminton Gold Rush in Exeter

On Thursday 4th March, the University of Exeter Sports Park was a buzz of badminton. 21 schools from across the South West Region battled it out within their respective categories for the title of Center Parcs National Schools Championships 2010 South West Regional Champion.

Over 240 schools initially entered the competition last September from the South West region, first successfully competing in their local areas and then within their county rounds to qualify for the Regional Finals in Exeter. A total of 140 competitors competed in around 150 singles and doubles badminton rubbers throughout the day, all supervised by umpires from the South West Badminton Umpires Association and 11students from Truro School and Truro College, Cornwall and the University of Exeter.

The winning school in each of the four categories in the Regional Finals will now go through to the National Finals which will be hosted at Center Parcs Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire on 24th and 25th April. They will now represent the South West as they take on the eight other regions, all competing for national title glory.

Tim Jones, Regional Officer (Cornwall & Dorset) for Badminton England, says: "We would just like to highlight the great work of Kath Wotton for coordinating the actual competition-side of the event throughout the day and the support of eight students from Truro College and Truro School who were invaluable."

The aim of the Center Parcs National Schools Championships is to create a ‘best in class’ tournament that provides a high-level competitive badminton opportunity for schools across England. As well as looking to build on the quality of competitive badminton played in, and between schools, the CPNSC will also give badminton’s talent identification process a real boost with the chance to see such a large number of children in action.

Rob Allison, Assistant Manager at Center Parcs, Longleat commented: “We are really pleased to be the title sponsor for such a great event. The standard was extremely high and played in good spirit.”

Susan Cooper, South West Regional Manager commented: “We have been delighted with the turn out of over 140 young people competing to represent the South West at the National Finals to be held at Sherwood Forest in April. We could not have staged such a vibrant event without the volunteers from Truro School and Truro College from Cornwall and the University of Exeter.”
