2014 Cornwall Beach Games

On Friday 16th May 2014, 12 companies from across Cornwall headed to Tolcarne Beach to take part in the annual barefoot sports competition in Newquay.

The 2014 Cornwall Beach Games saw over 100 people come together and compete in a series of sporting activities such as Volleyball, Netball, Cricket, Surf Life Saving, Tug of War and the famous Sandcastle building competition.

The event co-organised by the Cornwall Sports Partnership, Health Promotions' Healthy Workplace Programme and Cornwall College gives Cornish Companies the chance to have some active fun outdoors with their fellow colleagues.

Mike Thomas, Director of the Cornwall Sports Partnership said: "This event provides workplaces with a range of informal sports and activities, on the beach and in the water. It was fun, at times it was tough, but all day all we saw was smiles. At the end there were tired and weary bodies but the teams and individuals took to the events and the activities with plenty of enthusiasm and enjoyment."

During the closing ceremony, all companies received a Beach Games pennant to remember the day with the top 3 teams presented with an award to celebrate their achievements.  In third place BT Cornwall Hero's, in second place Cornish Mutual and in first place Health Promotion.

Rose Knuckey from winning team Health Promotion said: "It was a fantastic day which brought lots of different companies together. It really did consider all abilities and ensured there was a mixture activities for everyone to participate.  It was tough at times, but it was all worth it when we received the gold award. Fun and well organised event and I am already looking forward to next year".

Russell Lawrence Director of Sport at Cornwall College said: "Stunning weather stunning location stunning event well done the CSP Health Promotion and Cornwall College for facilitating another superb event".

Rachel Faulkner, NHS Workplace Health Coordinator, commented: "It's fantastic to be able to offer such an exciting event and inject a bit of fun to the end of a working week.  We hoped the Beach Games would give employees the chance to have some fun with their workmates, meet new people and get a bit more active; going by people's faces on the day, we 100% succeeded!"
