Cornish sports store rewards local volunteers
This week two new sports volunteers received the accolade of being the Cornwall Sports Partnership's 'Sport Makers of the Month' for which they both received a £50 voucher for Tony Pryce Sports.
Simon Court from Penryn and Wendy Creed from Truro were this week announced by the Cornwall Sports Partnership as the two volunteers who have shown outstanding efforts since becoming a part of the Sport Makers programme. In Cornwall the programme is being sponsored by Tony Pryce Sports and both volunteers were awarded a £50 voucher by the store in Truro on Thursday 14 June.
Sport Makers aims to inspire over 400 people in Cornwall to get involved in volunteering, with each of them receiving training and spending at least 10 hours organising or leading sporting activities; it is open to anyone aged 16 and over and is part of the Places People Play legacy programme that is bringing the magic of a home Olympic and Paralympic Games into communities across the country.
Simon and Wendy signed up to the programme earlier in the year and since then have helped a number of people take part in sport. Simon, who works for Falmouth University Tremough Campus, helped to voluntarily organise and run the 2012 Tremough Community Games which saw over 350 attendees get involved in a number of fun sports activities. Wendy, a student at Truro College, spent her volunteering hours organising and running the 3 day 'All Ability and All Inclusive Cycling Networking Conference' which received over 100 participants.
Simon Court comments: "With London 2012 around the corner there is a buzz in the air about Sport and there are opportunities locally and nationally for people to get involved in getting people active. The Sports Makers scheme has given me motivation and focus on how I make this Olympic year fun and active for everyone I come into contact with through work, social groups or sport and recreation clubs.
"By just attending a free 3 hour course I now feel I am armed with the knowledge and expertise to get involved with or even run sport and recreation events. Also, not forgetting the fantastic free t shirt and kit bag you get for attending the course!"
Jackie Lawrence, at the Cornwall Sports Partnership commented: "Simon and Wendy have achieved fantastic things through their volunteering but they're not the only two. What we've found by running Sport Makers is just how many people want to help make sport happen in their community; and the training and programme support has given them the opportunity to do just that. And, to do it really well!"
