Cornwall College Christmas Games 2014

Cornwall College Christmas Games 2014

On Wednesday December 10th 2014 the inaugural Cornwall College Christmas Games took place at Camborne and saw almost 200 students from 5 campuses taking part in Volleyball, Football and Boccia.

There was a very festive feel to the day with mince pies being given to every team that took part and Christmas fancy dress being strongly encouraged, which some teams took a bit more seriously than others!!....

The Games were opened by The CEO of The Cornwall College Group, Amarjit Basi who took the opportunity to welcome everyone to Camborne and remarked on the high numbers of students who were participating in the event. Following Amarjit's opening speech the event began with a group dance warm up in the sports hall which was led by Rebecca Uterhark of RU Fit and got everyone ready for the day of sport!

There were individual competitions in Volleyball, Football and Boccia with all the points that were accumulated by the teams in these competitions going towards an overall winning locality trophy. The whole day was played in a brilliant spirit with all students relishing the opportunity of some inter campus rivalry!!

The football which was played over 4 groups, followed by a knock out competition was eventually won by a sports team from Duchy Stoke Climsland who beat St Austell 1-0 in a closely fought final.

The Volleyball was just as keenly contested with two groups battling it out for a place in the knock out stages. After two very close semi-finals the final was contested between Camborne BTec Students and Falmouth Marine School with Camborne just coming out on top to claim the trophy on home soil!

The Boccia, which has proved to be extremely popular amongst students with learning difficulties across Cornwall College was played in a very friendly/social spirit with Rosewarne Path Finder's just pipping Camborne to the post to claim the trophy on points difference. This is the second Boccia trophy that Rosewarne have won in the last four weeks so congratulations to everyone involved there!!

After all the individual competitions had come to a close Jen, Kate and Jamie totalled up all the points that had been accumulated and the first winners of The Cornwall College Christmas Games were won by..... The West Locality!!!!

Huge congratulations to all the students from the West for winning the shield and of course their Sports Maker!!

As well as trophies for the spots competitions there was also a prize for the best fancy dress on the day. This was won by Dani Hamilton's Christmas Fairies and I don't think many people would argue with the decision!!!

A huge thank you goes to all the staff and students who entered teams from right across the College and made the event such a successful one, especially those who travelled from Stoke Climsland, St Austell and Falmouth.

The West are already looking forward to defending the trophy next year!!
