Cornwall Cougars launch wheelchair basketball team
The Cornwall Cougars men's team have been put through their paces during a friendly game against their club companions, the newly formed Cornwall Cougars' Wheelchair Basketball Team.
The two teams played against each other at Truro College on Thursday 21 July, giving the new team their first experience of a competitive match and the county-level team players their first ever taster of the wheelchair form of the game. A close match throughout, the final score was 18-21 to the Cougars' men's team.
The Cougars' Wheelchair Basketball team has been set up and will continue to be coached by Steve Hillman, Disability Sports Development Officer at the Cornwall Sports Partnership. He commented: "It's been a really exciting game and such an important one for inclusion sport in Cornwall. The two teams really played well together and the commitment and encouragement from all the players really shone through.
"From the red faces and massive smiles I can honestly say that everyone has had a fantastic time, and this evening marks just how strongly Wheelchair Basketball and disability sport in Cornwall is continuing to grow."
Andy Cummins, Cornwall Basketball Development Officer and Cornwall Cougars Team Manager, commented: "Giving our county men's team the opportunity to experience wheelchair basketball was fantastic; all those who took part had a great evening and thoroughly enjoyed giving it a go!
"The good work that Steve Hillman has done is outstanding and it is wonderful that Cornwall Cougars can now offer wheelchair basketball, so that everyone in Cornwall has the opportunity to play the game."
The new club is open to anyone to join, regardless of age, disability or ability, so if you're keen to give it a go, contact Steve Hillman on 01872 323344 / email@example.com
