Cornwall to hold court with Badminton Month

Get Active Cornwall, a new Cornish website dedicated to helping us be more physically active, is this month providing plenty of opportunities to have a go at badminton.

Teaming up with Badminton England, Get Active Cornwall is all set to offer a fun and friendly way to get fit with all new badminton sessions happening throughout October, as a part of the website’s regular ‘Activity of the Month’ feature.

The idea behind Get Active Cornwall’s Badminton Month is to open up playing opportunities to anyone wanting to give the sport a try for the first time, or perhaps give it another go after not playing for a few years (or decades!).

At the heart of the activities on offer will be the launch of No Strings Badminton across the county; a fresh, new initiative that makes it simple, affordable and extremely sociable for anybody to enjoy the benefits of badminton.

The sessions will provide weekly or twice-weekly ‘pay and play’ opportunities for adults of any age or ability to simply turn up and have fun on their own terms. With a co-ordinator hosting every session, you’ll be guaranteed a playing partner on hand.  Centres involved in the initiative include Helston Sports Centre, Penzance Leisure Centre, Polkyth Leisure Centre in St Austell and Truro Leisure Centre. For further session details, visit www.getactivecornwall.co.uk

In addition to the No Strings sessions taking place throughout the month, Penryn College will be hosting a Badminton Bonanza Tournament on Saturday 16 October. The event is aimed at giving fun and experience to players, over the age of 16, who have only previously played recreationally and who would otherwise have limited opportunities to compete in tournaments.

Plus, bringing badminton outdoors, there will be a free fun drop-in event taking place all day on Monday 25 October on Lemon Quay in Truro. Coaches will be on hand to introduce shoppers and passers-by to a few shots and tricks of the game, and anyone interested in taking up the sport will be able to find out more about their local club.
