Dance fever set to hit Cornwall

Young Urban (Street, Hip Hop and Break) dance enthusiasts across Cornwall are being given a fantastic opportunity to develop their skills through a series of free workshops running over the next year.

The ‘Let’s Dance with Change4Life’ workshops will see dynamic young Dance Leaders from Camborne sharing their moves with their peer group in Penzance, Helston, Newquay, St Austell and Bodmin. The programme kicks off with the first workshops taking place during half-term at the YMCA in Penzance on Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 June. (The full programme of events is in the note to editors)

Professional choreographers, dance teachers and technicians will work alongside the Dance Leaders to ensure each workshop is a memorable day for everyone taking part. The workshops are free and open to anyone aged between 11 and 18 who would like to take part. At each event there will be the chance to try out different Urban dance styles including Breaking, Hip Hop and Street and there will be free fresh fruit and smoothies to help keep energy levels up.

The TR14ers, a youth dance charity from Camborne, will deliver each of the workshops based on their five years of success. They have grown from a handful of participants to a regular following of up to 120 young people taking part each week. The aim is to take this enthusiasm out to other areas of the county and inspire more local dance.

The project has been developed through a partnership of local and national agencies. NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly worked with the TR14ers and developed an initial plan which attracted funding from the Change4Life programme run by the Department of Health. Additional resources have been committed for venues (Cornwall Council), for workshop input (FEAST), for tutor and local volunteer support (Combined University Falmouth) and evaluation of the project being led by the Peninsula Medical School (NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly).

It's all part of a regional 'Let's Dance with Change4Life' initiative to get young people 'Up and About' and having fun dancing. Mass participation dance events will be taking place over the summer and into the autumn in Exmouth, Plymouth, Swindon and Bridgwater town centres.

Welcoming the project, Director of Public Health for NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly, Cornwall Council and the Council of the Isles of Scilly, Felicity Owen said: “Helping more young people to stay active and be healthy is a key local priority but we know that we need to offer opportunities that are inspiring and fun. Dance is a fantastic way to enjoy activity and use creative energy and the learning that will be passed between young people in these workshops should prove very exciting. I am pleased a range of local partners have come together to get this project going as it will give us valuable insight on how to respond to young people’s needs.”

Hannah age 14, a Dance Leader for the TR14ers said: “The whole crew is really excited about getting out and about in Cornwall and meeting young people interested in Urban dance. We want to create a real vibe in every place we visit and share some routines and throw some moves with the local guys. It’s going to be awesome to see what new ideas we can all come up with, from absolute beginners to more advanced dancers, everyone is welcome. I can’t wait!”
