Devon Active Villages Project Selected as a Finalist in the National Lottery Awards 2013!
For people living in a remote, rural area it can often be difficult to access sports facilities in the local area. Since 2010, however, more than 10,000 people in rural communities across Devon have been able to take part in sport on their doorstep, thanks to the Devon Active Villages project, run by Active Devon.
So far, 120 villages have benefitted from the ambitious project and it's not surprising that there are others queuing up to take part! West Down Village Parish Councillor, Carole King explained: "The Active Villages programme allowed us to bring enjoyable activities to all age groups. Older people were given training to take part in an Orienteering group, while a Pilates club was set up for a younger age group. We have reinvigorated a local youth club by letting them take part in adventurous activities like rock climbing, and the local school's football teams now have their own strip. These initiatives would not have happened without Active Villages, and it is so important in isolated rural areas like this to provide activities that improve fitness and promote community spirit."
Active Devon are thrilled that their Active Villages project has been shortlisted as one of six finalists in this year's National Lottery Awards 2013 (Best Sport Project category).
