ESAA Cross Country Cup

ESAA Cross Country Cup

On Saturday 5 December, Newquay Tretherras School played host to the English Schools Cross Country Cup for which schools had qualified from all areas of England through their Regional Finals.

Cornwall was fortunate to have four teams competing: Penair School had teams in the junior boys (years 7 & 8) and intermediate girls (years 9 & 10); there were two teams in the junior girls from Truro School; and the host school Tretherras.

The courses were demanding after the recent rain but all agreed they were a good challenge and very spectator friendly. Thankfully, the rain that was forecast did not materialise until the end of the last race.

Penair School ran well as a team to be placed second in the intermediate girls race but the host school were rewarded with an individual winner in the junior girls race with Charlotte Cayton-Smith leading throughout the race.

The event also saw local personalities assist with the presentations: Richard Higginson, the head of PE at Tretherras presented the intermediate boys team race; Dave Buzza, an ex Olympian from Cornwall A.C. presented the junior boys race trophies; and John Willcocks, ex cross country teacher from Penair School presented the intermediate boys individual trophies. Sue Martin, the head teacher of Tretherras School, had the proud task of presenting Charlotte and the individual medallists in the junior girls race.
