Get out running, Cornwall!

Run Cornwall

On coastal paths, country trails and residential roads, running is growing as an immensely popular way to exercise in Cornwall.

Research has identified it as the largest participation sport in the country and there are national plans to get thousands more people involved.

Locally, Run Cornwall (RC) has been set up with the aim of getting 650 people to take up regular weekly running by this time next year.

Rob Cockings, Run Cornwall Coordinator said: "Working with partners within the community, education and private sectors, Run Cornwall will give people the chance to participate in running on a weekly basis in a friendly and safe environment and at a convenient local venue.

"People with a passion for running will be recruited to help other work colleagues and members of their local community to get started in running, and will be trained as leaders in running fitness (LiRF) to lead groups at work, within schools and colleges and their local communities."

The project will target those aged 16 or over who have never run before, used to run regularly, or have previously taken part in one off events.

Helston sports centre is preparing to start a running group this month and the Draceana Centre in Falmouth is starting a zero to three miles training programme on March 14th. Chartered accountants firm Francis Clark has also set up a RC group which is open to anyone to join.

Plus the National Trust will be working with RC to help members train and take part in events on at least two of its estates in the county.

RC is being coordinated by the Cornwall Sports Partnership which has won funding from government body Sport England to deliver new activities within the county.

Mr Cockings said funds were available to train leaders and help with venue hire costs and running group promotions, aiming to help more businesses, organisations and communities set up running groups.

It is supported by Run England and England Athletics and will work with partners in the health, fitness and activity sectors to offer links into events, discounted sports kit offers, training advice and information about local running clubs.
