Coronavirus, an update from Active Cornwall

Go on, give bowls a go!

Cornwall Outdoor Bowls season

An exciting Cornish website is enabling and challenging the county to have a go at something we maybe wouldn't usually consider trying - bowls!, developed specifically to inspire and motivate Cornish residents to be more active, will be promoting opportunities to try bowling next weekend and then throughout the summer months. Designed to help us all achieve our 5 x 30 minutes of exercise a week, Get Active Cornwall provides useful tips and advice on how to get started and to find the right activity for you. Without preaching, it explains the benefits of being active and keeping fit; in an attempt to coax us gently off our sofa and on our feet!

It may be perceived as an older persons' sport but, quite understandably, more and more young people are getting involved and even received some celebrity endorsement with Gavin & Stacey's Mathew Horne and T4 presenter Rick Edwards taking part in a niche bowling event in London.

Now it's your chance to give it a go! In collaboration with The Cornwall Bowls Alliance, outdoor bowls clubs across the county will be opening their doors on April 21 and 22 to welcome anyone who wants to try out their jack skills and draw shots during free Taster Sessions and Club Open Days. What's more, they will also continue to offer new members the opportunity to come and play throughout the whole of the summer.

If you are starting out then all you need are some flat soled shoes and comfortable clothes. The clubs will provide other necessary equipment during the taster sessions - plus expert tuition from experienced coaches will be made available at no extra charge.

Later in the year, indoor and short mat bowls clubs will be making the same offer to new members when they host open days in September.

With plenty of opportunities to get bowling this month and throughout the summer, why not give it a go and surprise yourself! For further details, visit
