Penwith College second year A'Level Student, Tom Holland, produced a remarkable mountain biking performance at the recent 'Stinger' duathlon event, to help secure second place for the Penwith College pairing of Tom and College Sports Maker, Julian Wills.

The race took place in the woods of Newnham Park, Plymouth, after heavy rain, creating a muddy and slippery conditions for the 5k x-country run, a 20k mountain bike, followed by a 3k Stinger run.

The Penwith College pair teamed up against high calibre of competitors from across the region to take on one of the most challenging duathlon events in the area, with Julian completing the running and Tom undertaking the cycling.

The duo, who are both sponsored by 'Velotiove', embraced the poor conditions, with Tom recording the fastest bike time of any of the 200+ competitors and Julian clocking the fourth fastest run time. The pair eventually came in second place just behind the overall winners, and more than 15 minutes ahead of third place.

Tom is planning to progress to Swansea University after completing his A'levels at Penwith College, where he is hoping to test his mountain biking talents further in the Welsh mountains. Tom said "This is a great race. We really enjoy racing in these conditions and challenging ourselves against the elements.
