Run Cornwall group gets sponsored by Cornwall College

The Olympics showed the huge pride, talent and interest in sports that exists in Cornwall and now three local organisations have come together to use their expertise to build on that groundswell and provide more opportunities for sporting excellence and participation in the area.

Cornwall College Camborne, Cornwall Athletic Club and Cornwall Sports Partnership's new programme 'Run Cornwall' have found a way to support and develop participation in sport by sharing their sporting knowledge and experience for the benefit of local community and their staff, students and athletes.

The Run Cornwall programme has been recently set up to support beginner runners to get into the sport and develop their abilities. Cornwall AC has joined the programme and set up its own beginner running group; and this group has recently been sponsored by Cornwall College.

Programme Leader for Higher Education Sport & Public Services at the college, Philip Toy, recently visited the club's newly formed Beginners Walk Run Group to present the leaders with fluorescent jackets, sponsored by Cornwall College and to find out how the group had been started and developed. The group began eight weeks ago, with many people who were new to running and could only manage one minute of continuous running at a time. The group is already on track to complete a thirty minute continuous run in a weeks' time and some are even considering their first race in December.

In the future, Cornwall College students will have the chance to work alongside experienced UK Athletics trained track and field coaches, train with athletes at the club and support and gain experience of official events and races; whilst the club is benefitting from sponsorship, promotion and sports science expertise at the college.

Phillip comments: "This is a relationship that will flourish and build over time, so we are really looking forward to what it might achieve."
