SPORTIVATE TO INJECT £100,000 INTO SPORT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN CORNWALL

Sportivate

Cornish organisations are now able to apply for a share of £100,000 over the next year to help young people get into sport in the county.

On Monday 2nd November, Cornwall Sports Partnership launched the sixth year of the Olympic-inspired programme, Sportivate, for 14 to 25 year olds to get into sport. As the local driving force behind the national campaign to increase levels of participation, Cornwall Sports Partnership will be awarding grants to support local sporting projects focusing on those working with 19-25 year old males and 14-25 year old females who are active for less than 4 x 30 minutes per month.

Over the past five years, over 5000 young people have taken part in Sportivate sessions and 4650 have completed five out of six sessions.  92% of the completed participants have then been sustained in their activity 3 months later.  Since its existence, the project has also won two national participant awards, three project regional awards and one regional participant award.

Lewis Sanders, Project Coordinator from Cornwall Sports Partnership says "For Cornwall to get this funding to make a difference to so many young people's lives it is just fantastic.  The difference it has made over the past 5 years is brilliant and I am sure that we can make a difference this year to nearly 1000 more young people."

Jane Jedwab from Polmartin Riding Centre has received Sportivate Funding to encourage more young people to take part in horse riding in the Liskeard area.  She says "Without the Sportivate funding from Cornwall Sports Partnership we would not be able to introduce horse riding to these young people.  The funding reduces so many barriers to make it accessible for disadvantaged young people in the area who previously would not have the chance."

Mike Thomas, Director at the Cornwall Sports Partnership, comments: "Through Sportivate funding we have been able to invest in Cornish community clubs and organisations, providing essential resources to get more young people more active and also build a legacy from the 2012 Olympic games."
