Truro College Higher Education Students reach finals of SW University Bouldering Champs
A team of Higher Education students from Truro College headed to West Devon on Saturday night to represent the College at the South West Universities Regional Bouldering Championships. The students, who are studying degrees and foundation degrees at Truro College, competed against university students from Bath, Exeter, Plymouth and other establishments from across the region.
The competition took place at The Barn Climbing Centre, Milton Abbot, with climbers undertaking various bouldering challenges, picking up points for the number of routes that they completed. Bouldering is similar to climbing, but is carried out without harnesses and ropes, with protective crash mats to help absorb any falls. After a set time climbers hand in their score cards, and the six highest scoring competitors go on to the finals climb off.
All the students competed extremely well, with two of the Truro College team managing to reach the finals. Beth Atherton eventually finishing in fifth place and Emma Hide coming fourth, only missing out on a podium place on count back.
The students all attend the Truro College Climbing Club sessions which take place in the sports hall of Wednesdays 4.30-6pm, and are delivered as part of College's Health, Wellbeing and Sport programme, supported by Velotive. The weekly sessions are accessible to all students at the college for free as part of the College enrichment offer, with all equipment provided. Both finalists, Beth and Emma, help run the club and have been inspirational in getting more students participating in the sport.
The College has recently secured funding from the Cornwall Sports Partnership through the Sportivate initiative to help expand the climbing offer for students, and plans are already in place to extend climbing opportunities.
Julian Wills, College Sports Maker, said "The climbing initiative at the College has been extremely successful, with the club expanding week on week. I am extremely proud of the students efforts and attitude at the bouldering championships, we had a fantastic time and thoroughly enjoyed the experience"
