Netball, played by teams of seven, has long suffered from the fact that it was conceived in the 19th century as a women's alternative to basketball, which was tricky to play in the women's outfits of the time. Now, 1 million women play netball in the UK every week.

If you haven't played netball since you were at school, maybe you should have another look at the game... it has something for everyone, whatever their level of fitness. On average you will burn 600 calories playing an hour's netball match and improve your balance, agility and co-ordination!

In Cornwall there are 25 Clubs across the county from St Just to Bude competing in the Cornwall League which has 6 Divisions and 50 teams.  In total 625 people are registered as playing netball in Cornwall.  In fact, there will be a netball club near you as most of the towns in the county have a club.

Netball is cheap to take part in, costing between £3 - £5 per session for adults and less for juniors.  Equipment-wise all you need is comfortable clothing and trainers.

At a Junior level there are 11 Junior Clubs in Cornwall competing in a league, most are attached to Senior Clubs to allow progression through to the adult game.

Cornwall also has a thriving Junior Development Squads system at U13, U14 and U16 age groups with Area academies across the county.  The West of England Netball Academy (WENA) is based at Truro College, its purpose is to produce England standard players. Head Coach of WENA and ex England U17 Coach, Jean Davies started the Academy in 1999.  The players currently working in WENA aged 11-18 have great opportunities to progress as it is an Extension Centre to the High Performance Netball Centre at Bath.

More recently WENA has spread its wings and has given opportunity for talented young coaches to become involved in coaching. These are players who have passed through WENA and are now putting something back into the sport that they love.  The ethos for Academy has always been "Preparing athletes to become the best that they can be"
